Informational Event About Benefits and Support Services for Families in Need
Event Details
In light of the difficult economic situation in our area, the number of families who are living on the edge is continuing to increase. We want to be certain that these families are aware of the governmental and non-profit agencies that are there to provide assistance to them. AppalReD, the provider of civil legal services to low income citizens in this area, and Big Sandy Area Community Action Program, the provider of a number of programs for low income persons in the area, including LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program), are hosting a two hour informational session that will provide this information to families in need. The event will be held on Monday, January 23, 2017 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Mountain Arts Center in Prestonsburg, KY.
Representatives from various agencies will be there to present information about state programs, such as Medicaid and food stamps; health care access; food pantries; housing; legal services; utility assistance; job training programs; and other support services. Representatives of Mountain Comprehensive Care will be there to provide information about counseling services. Local attorney Ned Pillersdorf will be there to provide an update on the status of the hearings and litigation affecting the former clients of Eric C. Conn, many of whom are facing the loss of their benefits while the litigation proceeds. Representatives of other non-profits and agencies who can provide assistance are encouraged to come to present information. Affected families are encouraged to attend. For further information, call Robert Johns, AppalReD director, 606-886-9876, Ext. 1247; or Mike Howell, Big Sandy Area Community Action Program Director, 606-789-3641.
